My name is Daniel
Perdomo and I write to bring focus to the use of plastics and the
negative impact it has in our environment. Before I continue, I would
like you to know that I seek neither benefit nor remuneration
from this effort, I only seek an opportunity to make a difference by
reaching key organizations and/or individuals who have the ability and
resources to change the way people use and dispose of plastic materials
we discard daily. Our prize is to give future
generations the chance to grow up and experience the same environment
we grew up in.
Again the Taco Bell Restaurant is in Homestead, see below map.
I tried reaching the
Manager but since it was 8:30 am on a Saturday the restaurant was
closed. Needless to say, the bottles, plastics, and cans were purchased
from Taco Bell, not that the negligence of the user
is Taco Bell’s fault; however, the point is that great organizations
and leaders can’t leave the responsibility of the environment to the
majority, which unfortunately is uneducated. I’m aware of Taco Bell’s
Foundation for Educating Teens and the fight against
hunger, this is fantastic. However, the environment needs to be
preserved to guarantee a future for our generations by setting example.
As managers, we know
that management works from the top down, well Mr. Creed, this is why I
reach to you for an opportunity to make a difference. We all know there
are costs involved when making operations more
efficient and sustainable, but the price our future generations will
pay will be so vast it will not fit on a spreadsheet if we don’t take
action today. Some countries have already started imposing a tax on fast
food companies that use plastics, for example
Germany. It is only a matter of time before such taxes travel the world
and become a business expense. Perhaps instead of ignoring the problem
until it becomes an expense, you could lead the industry towards policy
that would prevent that tax from taking place,
for example by asking Government to provide better means for industries
to properly dispose of used plastics, for doing research to find ways
to make un-recyclable plastics recyclable, for government to provide tax
exemptions for companies that are environmentally
friendly. Mr. Creed, the problem we face with the environment shouldn’t
end up as a business expense, the problem can be tackled with an
incentive to motivate corporations and individuals to do better for
themselves.
I hope that you find
the courage and wisdom within you to lead your organization into a new
era, a time in which the fast food industry becomes part of solving one
of the problems we face on the environment.
