WRITINGS by Sandy's PAGE: NEW YEAR article

New Years Eve is the time when everyone wants to set goals and expectations for the incoming year. But let’s face it, there’s no cut off switch from 2010 to 2011. You don’t wake up January 01, 2011 and all your problems from last year are gone! Their still there! Your still 10 pounds overweight, your bills are still due and you still hate your job. You only wish for a moment that at the stroke of midnight your fairy godmother shows up, and turns your pumpkin into a carriage. But since fairy godmothers only exists in movies, and last I checked wishes come true only for a lucky few….Here are a few more realistic tips on setting your goals this new year, and sticking to them (at least until march!)

1.        Determine which things are most important: don’t let the urgent crowd out the important. Make a list of priorities, for example: quitting smoking is very important, losing weight may not be as much (unless there are health issues like blood pressure or diabetes) considering you have all year to lose weight. Renewing your passport is also important, especially if one of your “resolutions” this year is to travel.

2.        Set a timeline:  Once you’ve determined which items are a must do for January 2011, give yourself a timeline to when you’ll complete your task. Set periodic reminders on your calendars. If you’re like most procrastinating and forgetful Americans, you have a wall calendar at home, a cell phone calendar, your personal work computer calendar, and even your office computer calendar. Set your reminder for the old rule 2.2.2; 2 days, 2 weeks, and 2 months. And set the reminder on ALL your memory devices! This will guarantee to remind you where you are in the process.

3.        Reward yourself when you accomplish, but don’t kill yourself if you don’t:  When you complete a goal, treat yourself to your favorite coffee or a yummy ice cream to reinforce the fact that “hey, I can do it, when I really want too!” but at the other end, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t actualize your vision in the time you’ve given yourself. I’m sure there were other “urgent” things that took precedence over the important.

Goals are best reached when they are realistic! You’ll only let yourself down if you hold yourself up to some outlandish unrealistic expectation. Remember that you are either your ‘own best friend’ or your ‘own worst enemy’ so be true to yourself, and truly dedicate time and energy to those things that are really meaningful for you. Focus on the things that will make you truly the happiest. Don’t do things because other people say you should. Do it for you, and only you! When you commit to your goal or resolution, follow your heart, and come up with something personal. And if your fairy godmother shows up at the stroke of midnight to grant you a wish….you probably fell asleep. WAKE UP! The  New Year is here!!

LOCAL: Fortun Insurance

Mission Statement

Our business is service. Protecting your business and personal assets against risk. We offer policies to cover virtually every conceivable circumstance. But the policy we’re proudest of is treating you right. In every situation. In every problem. In every way.

About Fortun Insurance

If you own a business, own a home or yacht, drive a car, require a performance bond or an employee group health plan… You should consider Fortun first.

Established in 1977, we are one of the area’s largest independent insurance agencies with a diversity of coverages not generally available at smaller, specialty firms. And since we are an agency… and not the insurer… we are not limited to one company’s products. We can choose the right coverage and the right price for you from a selection from the world’s foremost insurers, often a combination of products from several different sources.

One-stop shopping, in the truest sense. The convenience of a local agency for personalized attention… with the tremendous product variety and competitive pricing available from large, worldwide insurance companies.

Or, putting it another way, we don’t work for just one insurance company. We work for you.
Naturally, we develop and customize these insurance packages with the help of state-of-the-art technology. We even have our own building with separate departments to handle specialized products. But our greatest resource is our people. Many of them averaging 15 or more years of experience with insurance companies. Including licensed agents and licensed adjusters. Many with claims backgrounds and underwriting expertise. Staff. Equipment. Know-how. High risk and other special coverages. Payment plans for every budget. A quick, responsive claims handling operation, which has settled thousands of claims over the years.

All under one roof. All this, and more. If you’re a client already, we appreciate your business… and invite you to ask about other products when the need arises. If you’re not yet a client, we’d like you to think Fortun. We welcome your inquiry… including a visit to our office building for a closer look.

Hector Fortun, Chairman & CEO.

POEM: The Desert

My thoughts are lost in the sand
Cold and trembling once again
I spun myself in sheep’s fur
Alone in the dark, my vision a blur
I turn to my little lamp to spark a flame
One more flicker in a dozen of men doing the same
My only comfort, my little lamp
Slowly burning securely safe
Almost envious of it’s place
I imagine home and reminisce
Contemplating what will come of this
Some will say I’m a hero, but none will understand
What it’s like to be alone, in the desert sand.

WRITINGS by Sandy's PAGE: Little White Lies

Relationships are intricate and complicated. When lack of trust is present it adds chaos to the relationship. I’ve tried to treat my partner the way I’ve wanted to be treated, but it never worked. Maybe it’s because deep down inside I know that “ignorance is bliss” but I wanted to be respected, and to respect him. But how can you respect each others privacy and personal space, respect yourselves as individuals when you can’t trust? Are these kinds of relationships worth salvaging or working on? I guess it depends on the nature of the violation. Everyone has secrets; everyone is guilty of little white lies. After all, white lies shouldn’t be hurtful. For example parents lie to their kids all the time, Santa Claus, tooth fairy, the Boogie man. Adults use them too, calling in sick when we are really just tired. Wife’s telling their husbands “the shoes were on sale honey”,  but when the mistrust in a relationship is on a grander scale, such as infidelity or substance abuse, this tips the scale of ignorance to a forceful “need to know” of everything.  The relentless ,exhausting, pursuit of fact finding. Trust is the foundation of all relationships. Without trust, peace and harmony cannot survive. The extremity of infidelity leaves everyone broken. The victim of the offense is left with anger, resentment and worst of all they are left with their self-esteem shattered into a million pieces.  If substance abuse is the perpetrator of absent trust, then shadows of suspicion rear its ugly head daily. What drove the abuser to his substance? Will the abuser ever find the “thing” that his evil friend gives? There are just countless ways that trust can be violated, there are a million things we can do, from simply telling a friend that you couldn’t make it to her birthday party because you were sick and then she finds your facebook mobile check in at Hot Bar. I suppose the best policy is to tell the truth, and only the truth, no matter what. If you practice what you preach you have nothing to worry about and no reason to not be trusted. In fact you’ll be more respected in the end, because people will know that your trustworthy, and will always say what’s real. It’s better if feelings are hurt in the beginning when hearts are open to listening, than in the end when our ears and minds are closed due to our little white lie.

WRITINGS by Sandy's PAGE: DANGEROUS ADDICTION

I think of you with ever second of the clock, my being longs for you. I see you every where I go, your like a haunting ghost that follows me, I can’t escape your grasp, you have me cornered, pinned and I’m down for the count. There is nowhere I can turn to forget you. I want to break free from your grasp. I see your face when I close my eyes, with every blink. You body is sculptured in my mind, your every curve, every dimple, every birthmark. But I want to erase you from my life; I want to forget you ever happened to me. Only time will heal me, only space will put things back into perspective, only absence will cure my missing. I must detoxify from the poison you’ve injected me with. Your love is like venom slowly killing me, with every kiss, with every hug.

Our love turned from a beautiful high, to an unrecognizable miserable addiction. We became fixated on the negative things in our relationship. We got lost in the mayhem of us. The guilt of our past transgressions, our past behaviors, our actions; reflected in our every thought of each other. Suspicion and doubt became concentrated. The closer we became the more dangerous we were to one another. So many times we said-
this is it, No more, I cant, I wont, I refuse, but our addiction to one another is toxic and greater than either of us. Neither of us has the power or the will to stop. It is absolutely incapacitatingly paralyzing.

CHARITY: Where Hope Lives

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Please considering donating unused clothes, shoes, pots, pans, computers and other house hold items to the Community Partnership for the Homeless. Community Partnership is an organization dear to my heart. During my last visit I noticed a young teenage girl wearing a blouse from a bag of woman's clothing I donated the day before. It was heartwarming to see that blouse go directly to a young girl in need. It looked great and fit her perfectly. Thanks to supporters like you and I there is hope for those in need in our community.

When you donate to Community Partnership you are helping the following causes:

Shelter for Women and Children of domestic violence.
Men, Women and Teens in need of drug rehabilitation and detox.
Men, Women and Children in need of dental and health care.
Men, Women and Children in need of clothing and shoes.
Men, Women and Children in need of education.
Men and Women in need of work opportunities.

ABOUT COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP:

Help the homeless in Miami.

Community Partnership for Homeless, is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) corporation, governed by a Board of Directors. The current Chairman is Robert E. Chisholm and the Founding Chairman is Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Our mission is to operate two Homeless Assistance Centers and to raise the private funding necessary to assist in the implementation of the Miami-Dade County Community Homeless Plan. Community Partnership for Homeless is further committed to assisting the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust in this implementation through encouraging private sector involvement.

Community Partnership for Homeless grew out of the grave concern local citizens and politicians had about the growing problem of homelessness. The late Governor Lawton Chiles appointed a blue-ribbon panel (“Governor’s Commission on Homeless”) to address this issue. The Governor’s Commission on Homeless in 1992 and 1993 developed a strategic plan to serve the homeless. This plan called for a joint public–private sector partnership to respond to the growing problem of homelessness within Miami-Dade County. Community Partnership for Homeless serves as the private sector partner and the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust is the public partner.

The capital and operational needs of Community Partnership for Homeless are funded largely by the one percent sales tax on food and beverages at certain restaurants in Miami-Dade County. Charitable foundations, corporations, and individuals provide the remainder of the financial needs of Community Partnership for Homeless.

Currently, Community Partnership for Homeless operates two Homeless Assistance Centers – The Chapman Center in downtown Miami and the South Miami-Dade Center in Homestead.

The accomplishments of Community Partnership for Homeless have been exceptional. Since opening our doors in 1995, 61.82% of our former residents have successfully moved off the streets of Miami-Dade and on their way to attaining greater stability and self-sufficiency. Clearly, the greatest accomplishment, however, is the difference being made in the lives of the homeless from within our community.

ART: Miami Artist SARAH BALLARD

ART BASEL
This is a series of Black & whites I titled "Left for the wolves" as always
my work focuses on a female subject. These are self portraits.

My work brings the weaknesses and strengths of femininity to life somewhere
between reality and fantasy. I try to bring a certain situation to every
photograph leaving much to the imagination in the eyes of the viewer. Death
and morbidity shroud most of my work... Yet the possibility of life dances
in the distance. The lighting, angles, balance and positions of the
character (always female) clearly exude mystery and illusion which both
captivate and intrigue a certain awkward interest. SARAH BALLARD
