September has proven to be an exciting month that introduced thousands of new people to HHF. As we took part in several memorable events in the course of the month, we have made incredible strides to spread our mission alongside new partners and supporters. It was with great pride that Happy Hearts Fund entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, (MoU) with the Inter-American Development Bank at the Clinton Global Initiative to rebuild schools in Haiti that were affected by the January 12, 2010 earthquake. Joined at the signing by President of the Republic of Haiti Michel Martelly, we are so honored to announce this joint commitment that falls under the Haitian Education Plan 2010-2015, aiming to expand access to education for all Haitian children. "The Inter-American Development Bank is very proud to be working with the Happy Hearts Fund on the incredible possibilities to support the children of Haiti through the education projects we will develop and implement together, in coordination with the Government of Haiti and in line with the Government's Education Strategy," said IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno. Petra Nemcova and Phil Caputo from HHF join Akhtar Badshah, Senior Director Community Affairs, Microsoft; IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno, Agustin Aguerre, President of the Republic of Haiti Michel Martelly; Marcelo Cabrol; and Bernardo Guillamon. In addition to our participation at CGI, Happy Hearts Fund is so grateful to have been a part of the Travel + Leisure Global Bazaar and the second annual Women: Inspiration & Enterprise Symposium. Allowing guests to "Explore the World with One Ticket," the Travel + Leisure Global Bazaar served as the magazine's 40th anniversary and featured highlights from countries around the world. At the Chile display members of Happy Hearts Fund helped guests step inside a replica of the Chilean miners' rescue pod. We are also honored to have been the recipient of all funds raised from the live auction at the event. At the WIE Symposium, Happy Hearts Fund team members educated guests on our programs as Petra Nemcova spoke on the Future of Girls Education panel. It was a wonderful experience that allowed us to share our mission with new supporters. Following her panel discussion, Petra Nemcova was interviewed by the Huffington Post. Accomplishments to date... 55 Schools Built 34,330 Children Helped 337,450 Community Members Benefited The generous support of people like YOU has made these numbers a reality. This last month we visited our recently completed schools located in earthquake-affected areas of Peru. |
The festivities began as HHF joined AFP Integra president Jorge Ramos and Ofelia Rodriguez Larrain with their team at the grand opening of the Maria Auxiliadora School in Ica Peru. With the help of Architecture for Humanity, this school was built through the generous support of Gerry Cardinale, Enrico Gaglioti, Tim Ingrassia, Jeffrey Nedelman, Dina Powell and the Goldman Sachs Foundation. The wonderful students, their families, and the faculty arranged a special celebration that included music, dance, and special food. "The community is very proud of their new school and feel that it not only looks very nice and welcoming, but that it serves as an inspiration that is full of promises of hope for their children", said Diego Collazos of Architecture for Humanity. The celebration continued as the team of delegates from HHF and AFP Integra visited the Francisco Perez Anampa School in nearby Tate, made possible by the generosity of The Radcliffe Foundation. Filled with joy, the students presented the group with samples of their class work and gifts. Finally, the big moment came as the students were given a first hand look at the new state of the art computer lab containing ten magnificent Hewlett Packard computers.
